Success And Subject Matter

Drawing Subject Matter And Success

One of the most difficult things for me to learn was that special subject matter is not all that important for the success of a drawing or painting.

For me this meant moving away from subject matter that would sell like landscapes with old barns or beach scenes to just plain ordinary things like tomatoes in my backyard garden or small potatoes beginning to sprout.

So what does an artist say when his subject matter really is “small potatoes”?
